School-Based Therapy may be the Solution!
Child and adolescent mental health problems are at an all time high, including self-harm and suicidal behavior. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among children ages 10-14, as well as those ages 15-24. Recently there has been an increase in deaths by suicide among children, teenagers and young adults.
The delivery of school-based counseling removes many of the barriers to mental health services, such as missed appointments due to transportation challenges, the hardship of lost employment time for parents, and the financial strain on families to pay for private mental health treatment.
Many practices/agencies, including Sunny Path, tend to have waiting lists for individual therapy services. Delivering services in a group setting at school allows multiple children to benefit from learning coping skills at one time.
Evidence-Based Counseling Interventions
-
CBT is designed to help challenge irrational thoughts, alter problematic behavior, and instill positive beliefs to improve one’s self-esteem and quality of life.
-
The curriculum is evidence-based and divided into four main modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Each module includes a test.
-
Teaching children how to make and maintain friendships as well as how to handle situations of bullying.
-
How to self-regulate and deal with frustrating situations in the classroom. How to problem solve and communicate effectively with parents. Mindfulness can also help to destress and avoid burnout.
